Category 1: Chocolate cake
A traditional chocolate cake is a great cake to master. This is the closest ‘show cookery’ category we have in the bake off.
This is an all age category and will be judged live with microphones so you can hear all the cake feedback, tips & tricks.
***ALL OF THE BAKEOFF CATEGORIES ARE FOR AMATEUR BAKERS***
Recipe
Serves 8-10
Cooking time 40-45 minutes
Ingredients
1 3/4 cups SR Flour
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
3/4 cup caster sugar
1 cup milk
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
125g butter melted, cooled
Method
1. Preheat over to 180C. Grease a round cake pan (20-22cm in diameter), then line the base with baking paper.
2. Sift flour, cocoa and bicarbonate of soda together into a large bowl. Add caster sugar and stir to combine.
3. Combine milk, egg and vanilla essence in a jug.
4. Add milk mixture and cooled melted butter to flour mixture.
5. Using electric mixer on low speed, beat for 1 minute or until combined.
6. Pour mixture into prepared pan and smooth surface.
Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool in pan for 5 minutes then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Cake delivery: Saturday 25th July 2026 from 9am to 10am

Presentation: Cakes to be delivered on a disposable board or plate. This cake must NOT be iced.
Winners will be decided by our team of judges and no correspondence will be entered into.
